Just right before I drive deep into my experience at Macquarie University (MQU), I thought I should touch a little on my background to form some parameters on my review and let you understand why this review revolve around certain contexts that are dear to me. A little background: I’m a late-bloomer and terrible in my A-Levels back in Singapore. After 3 years of unsuccessful application to Singapore Universities. I managed to save up some money by working for the military and with the support of my parents; I decided that I will go overseas to pursue my interest in business, specifically marketing. I chose MQU because I have relatives in Sydney and MQU had good reputation for its business offerings – Accounting and Actuarial Studies. The most important advice I can say from my selection process is to decide on WHAT your interest is. Passion is a big factor. Form there, you can work downwards on which universities offers the best courses and so forth. Having no experience in other Australian Universities, my advice would seem baised. On the whole, I find my MQU experience to be enjoyable and enriching.

MQU allows students with poor entry results to study in its foundation school Sydney Institute of Business (SIBT) for a diploma. Based on the results of the diploma, they will offer entry directly into 2nd year of your chosen university degree. They consider that as a trial. That was the turning point of my life. Gaining admission to MQU was relatively easy, I think the major problem is figuring out how to gain entry into the country. I sought IDP's help to explain to me the process of application, going to medical check ups, applying for the Visa and conatcting the University. There were no big hassles in getting the Visa compared to other countries. I heard people from other countries had to take IELTS (english tests) to get admission. Do check on that aspect if you are underqualified (e.g. on O levels)

I’ve attained my marketing degree in 2007 and based on my results, I applied and was given a full scholarship by MQU to pursue another year in the Honours Program. I would suggest you check out MQU's website or drop them a mail. They have very accomodating staff to attend to you queries. You will need to have a few strong references because they do request your references to comment about you.

I made many international friends all over the world during my stay at MQU where we explored Sydney, celebrated birthdays, spent or holidays and also grind the books together in the library before examinations. Most of my marketing lecturers were working professionals turned academics and they shared their experiences and observation with us. That helped makes sense of all the dry theories we had to absorb. The lectures are generally 3 hrs per week and 1 hr of tutorial. For marketing courses, the final exams are generally 50% and the rest of 50% is spread among coursework. This is good for me because I don't like to put all my eggs in the basket and also maintain consistency in my studies. Having seasons, there are the long summer holidays to take time off and mind off work and flying back home to see everyone back home. Most students work part-time because the workload is manageable. Australia is a big country. I think you will find pain if you do not drive, the buses are not frequent (comes are 15 minutes basis) and the networks can be confusing. I suggest to live within walking distance to university and proper planning before going out.

MQU looks old but the facilities are good. They recently invested in imporving their gym and swimming pool which is a great place to hang out after classes. There's the usual university bars, wireless network around campus, library and plenty of computer labs. I guess MQU is self sufficient and you can spend a hassle free day in uni. The students are friendly and there are a lot of international students around, mainly from China and HK. The uni accomodation is pricey, after a while when you make friends, you can move out to share accomodations with friends. I suggest more time invested to searching for the right accomodation (if you are on a budget.) There is a need to apply for working visa and getting a tax file number to start working. Getting job for me was hard because I'm not a PR and more importantly - the pay is based on age. Older people get paid more, so being young have a competitive advantage. I’ve growth on a personal level, independently managing my studies and life in Australia. There are also plenty of student activities and clubs to participate in. I’ve joined and became an executive for a student entrepreneurship club and had the opportunity to go to Stanford University for a week-long conference. There is also a mentoring program which I come to know my fantastic mentor who was encouraging and knowledgeable.

I believe it is subjective. I think the greatest advantage to recieve an overseas education is the opportunity to indulge in various cultures and learn from them. I gain alot from working with various students and learning on managing groups and communication. I'm not sure about you but most people hate group work (due to conflicts) but I learned to enjoy it. Having leaving the comfort of my home, I have to study, work and at the same time manage my life. Time management skills comes into play significantly. There is an alumni association to join and they are working on a mentoring program to benefit the student and allowing the alumni to contribute.
